Footpaths of Compton Down, Hursley, Oliver’s Battery and Compton

We set off by crossing the road, thus leaving Shawford Down behind.  Then we walk past some large houses, after which we enjoy open countryside on tracks and paths until we arrive at Hursley churchyard for a coffee break.  We go gradually uphill along the quiet Port Lane to Oliver’s Battery from where we undulate up Yew Hill and down towards Compton.  We will stop for our picnic lunch with (hopefully!) fine views of the surrounding countryside.   Finally we find our way back to the start.
