Around the Arle: Old Alresford and the Watercress Beds | 7.5 miles (Winchester Walking Weekend)

History, clear chalk streams and watercress - all to be discovered in a circuit around the valley of the River Arle.

Our journey begins by following the river toward Old Alresford, passing by the area's iconic watercress beds—a historic local industry that still continues today. Walk then strikes out across the fields to the quiet village of Bighton. From there, we turn south toward Bishops Sutton, enjoying the open views and fresh air that define this corner of the county. We shall picnic overlooking the village and enjoying the distant views.

The final leg of our walk brings us back via Tichborne Down which was part of the English Civil War battlefield of the Battle of Alresford, or Battle of Cheriton as it is known today, in March 1643.

This is a picnic walk so please bring something to eat and drink for the picnic stop, plus some spare water to keep you hydrated during the walk.

Clothing should include layers needed for the conditions. Stout footwear is advisable.
