Afternoon Half-Marathon: Shawford, Hursley and Bushfield | 13+ miles (Walking Weekend)

Power through a 13-mile challenge up Shawford Down and tracing historic estates through countryside south-west of Winchester.

This varied circular route forms the second half of our Weekend challenge. Starting from the East Winchester Park & Ride (St Catherine’s), the walk offers a wonderful contrast of scenery, taking in tranquil waterways, historic villages, and open field paths.

We begin by following the Itchen Navigation, where the level waterside paths provide a gentle start before we climb to Shawford Down. From there, the route turns westward through Hursley, a village steeped in local history, before we make our way back toward the city via the expansive perimeter of Bushfield Camp. This final stretch offers contrasting views of the Winchester skyline and the surrounding downs.

We will have two short refreshment stops, of about 10 mins.  Please bring plenty of water and easy to eat snack foods. It's important to wear adequate hiking boots.

The Full Marathon Challenge

For those seeking a true test of endurance, this walk is designed to link perfectly with the Morning Half-Marathon. By completing both, you will have achieved a full marathon hike in a single day—a fantastic accomplishment!  We will have a 20 to 30-minute transition break at approximately 1:00 pm—a perfect opportunity to refresh your feet with a change of socks or shoes.
