9 miles Purbeck Adventure

This is a seaside plus inland walk but because of the nature of the Purbecks, there are glorious views of the sea nearly the whole time. It was one of Winchester Ramblers most iconic walks for many years, discontinued as the leader(s) retired from long walks.  Now back but in shorter (9 mile) form because the people who loved it most no longer walk 13 miles! It's a "further-away walk", about 90mins minimum from Winchester, hence a later start (11am).

In order to have lunch at around 1300hrs following the later than usual start time, the morning session is under 5 miles and lunch will be at the Square & Compass in Worth Matravers. Note: the Square and Compass in Worth Matravers has asked for numbers/orders by Tuesday 23rd. There isn't much info on food options (see their website), so it's either take a punt on it, or take a picnic.  The menu is somewhat limited: various pasties and pies, a pot of cockles/mussels/olives or Dorset Apple Cake/Brownie/Flapjack.  A year or two ago there was a TV series of various walks around the country led by the comedian Bill Bailey, each week taking a different “celebrity” and when he was accompanied by Paul Merton they had lunch here!

The starting point car park is directly south of Swanage but can only be reached via the town.  There are “facilities” in the Visitors Centre adjacent to the car park. The cost of parking for over 5 hours is £7 thanks to Dorset County Council.

Traditionally for this walk, there is the option of a fish & chips supper in Swanage (with indoor seating if wanted) at the end of the walk.  If you’re willing to walk a little way, parking is free in most side streets away from the Front, otherwise it's £2 nearby. 

Please let me know by 1800hrs on Tuesday 23rd if you wish to eat in the pub and your lunch choice. If you intend to picnic please let me know you are coming by no later than 1800hrs on Wednesday 24th, as the walk will leave when all known walkers have arrived.
