9 miles circular Fort Nelson to Portchester

9 mile circular walk from Fort Nelson to Portchester on Thurs April 30th starting at 10am

Parking (now £3) is in the overflow visitor’s car park for the Royal Artilleries Museum in Fort Nelson (https://royalarmouries.org/visit-us/fort-nelson/ still free entry if you've got some spare time after the walk). OS grid ref: SU607070 on Explorer Map119; nearby Postcode PO17 6AN.

If coming towards the Fort from the west, the first guns of Fort Nelson are on your left. The car park is just past there on your right. Use the first parking area on the left.

We start with great views of Portsmouth and Harbour, then head gently down to Cam Mill, and walk on the very pleasant margins of Fareham Lake and the Harbour to Portchester for lunch in the Cormorant Pub. Picnickers can use the attractive grounds of nearby Portchester Castle. We'll pop in there for a quick look after lunch.

Pub menu at:  cormorantpub.co.uk

Includes sandwiches, which were very good last time around at (end 2024). But as no need to preorder the specials board may be worth a look.

There is a steady but gentle uphill for the last half-mile back to the car park. We made it 6.4 miles in the morning and 2.7 miles in the afternoon. No stiles. Mostly proper walking paths. Some walking on quiet roads (with pavements) both am and pm.

Hope you can join us. Please let me know by 6pm Wednesday saying if you're eating at the pub
