5-6 Selborne Hanger and Gilbert White’s Walk with a shorter option
The walk starts by following the Writers’ Way, in the opposite direction from Selborne Hill. Leaving the village, it winds its way along level tracks through fields and woods, passing Priory Farm, built on the site of Selborne Priory, and Combe Wood. Passing Three Ponds, set amongst meadows and woods, it returns to Selborne along Long Lythe, and then through Church Meadow, before a going up the back of Selborne Hill. There is about 30 minutes of steady ascent up a good quality path, before the route crosses Selborne Common. The last part of the walk is down the Zig-Zag of Selborne Hanger, with its spectacular views across the village to the Hampshire countryside beyond. There are no stiles on this route. The shorter option does not go up the hanger, but cuts back to the pub after the level section of walking.
