11+ Newbury area

The walk is a mixture of good tracks and paths through woods and across fields. There is some road walking, but the roads are all quiet rural roads, but there are some lovely long views at points and the countryside is looking glorious at this time of year.

The walk start in the village of Stockcross which to the west of Newbury, off the A4. We walk down to cross the River Lambourne before climbing north towards the village of Winterbourne. We walk through Snelsmore Common where there are some toilets. We then continue walking to stop at the ruins of Donnington Castle where we will have our picnic lunch.

In the afternoon we cross back over the River Lambourne and the site of the Second Battle of Newbury during the English Civil War was on the flat land on the other side of the river.

The walk finishes by following the River Lambourne upstream to Woodspeen where we climb back uo towards Stockcross and the car park.

Do join me me it is a lovely walk
