10 Miles - Elizabeth, Alfred, Wayland and a White Horse - 4 Characters in search of a walk

A perfect leisurely, ramble for a summer’s day. This walk combines glorious scenery and fine views with many points of historical interest. At a scant 10 miles and with nothing too challenging in the way of ascents and descents en route, we should all the more time to admire the Ridgeway, Vale of the White Horse and Lambourn Downs.

Starting from Ashdown House near Lambourn, we make our way via Alfred’s Castle ( a hillfort that is neither a fort nor on a hill) to the Ridgeway and the Bronze Age barrow at Wayland’s Smithy for our mid-morning break. From there we follow the Ridgeway eastward to Uffington Castle. We will have plenty of time to explore and admire the famous White Horse, having our lunch break in its sight. After lunch we stroll back to Ashdown over the ancient fields of the Lambourn Downs.
