10 miles Cheriton

This walk in the Hampshire countryside makes use of tracks, lanes and drove routes in a circuit around Cheriton. We leave Cheriton along Honey Lane (track) and join the South Downs Way, taking a short break after about an hour for a bring your own snack and drink.  We then head West along an old drove route through the hamlet of Beauworth towards the hamlet of Kilmeston when we turn North heading for the National Trust property of Hinton Ampner, taking in a great view of the elegant country manor of Hinton Ampner.

We stop en route for a BYO lunch, probably on a field edge so a sitting mat might be useful for keeping dry as the ground will be damp at the very least.

Our route then takes us through the fields where one of the most significant battles of the Civil War took place in 1643, ending in a victory for the Parliamentarians.

Finally we descend to our start in Cheriton crossing the early stage of the River Itchen which rises in Cheriton before making its way through Winchester to Southampton.

The Flower Pots Inn and Brewery is close to the end of the walk and is open on Sundays.
