10 miles Cheesefoot Head - A D Day Walk

We start at Cheesefoot Head and admire the natural amphitheatre where Eisenhower addressed the troops before D Day.  After this we make a long descent down Fawley Lane with long views from Fawley Down.  We have about 1km of road walking where we need to be alert to traffic and then turn off towards Hazeley Down making a stop at the War Memorial which should be a good time for a BYO coffee stop.  We then make our way towards Winchester over Twyford Down keeping an eye open for common and chalkhill blue butterflies.  After crossing the footbridge over the M3, so tragically cut through Twyford Down, we skirt St Catherine’s Hill and head to St Giles Hill.  A BYO lunch will be had hereabouts and a pub option will be offered with details to be provided on Thursday 30 May to the Winchester Ramblers email lists.

After lunch we pass through areas associated with encampments associated with the First World War  on Fairdown and Magdalen Down before descending to Chilcomb to pick up the South Downs way and make our way back in the climb back up the Cheesefoot Head.
